An Introduction

You won’t believe me anyway so let’s just call it a lie from the start. A story from the bottom of these tankards.

The Heir
The Spare
The Soldier
The Scholar

That’s how the rhyme goes. And that is what we had. Until me.

I was born nine years after the others. There was talk behind hands and looks from corners of eyes, of course. But it was ignored. I was a surprise, but I was not unwelcomed.

Then I arrived, dark where the others were fair. Now the talk, and looks, had to be considered. My father never had reason to doubt my mother’s faithfulness. But enemies will have their fun. So the mage was sent for and there was hurried discussion.

And when I was presented to the people, I was as fair as my siblings standing nearby. They were told I was fragile and it was accepted. If I was shown only when the ceremony absolutely demanded it while the older children were seen more often, it was understood. And if they forgot about me between times, so much the better.

Not that I was so brushed aside by my family. That I wish made clear. I see the look in your eye, you think this the bigger lie in my lie. But it is true. I was loved no less. The older ones understood the need for the deception. They knew the care taken with me was my burden and not a boon. I was a full member of the family.

It need not be said that the glamour was the first spell I learned. Oh, we all do magic in one way or another, my family. Not spoken of much, of course. And I am the only one on my path.

No, I will not show my other face to you. You don’t believe me, remember.

But I will answer your question and say why I left them. No, you didn’t ask that, you didn’t have to. That look from before, remember? Here, let me pour you some more.

No, I left because even a frail, last-born can be considered a prize by some families. And I was nearing the age that the ‘chance meetings’ would begin.

So we made the announcement that I was leaving. Off in search of better health, to better serve the family line, as it were. Made a festival of it, everyone saw me off. Few expected the figure they saw to return. But they had the four they needed, so I was expendable and there was little real concern.

And now I make my way, far from my home.

I see the look that’s in your eye now. Another one, playing at a title to impress. To give a story instead of coin. Because, you say to yourself, why share such a dangerous tale, when there must be those who would pay for it? And you would be right.

Were you to live long enough to tell it.

Ah, the surprise. Yes, my companions are most noble and would never lower themselves to this. That is why they have me.

For things exactly like this.

Good-bye.

About

This blog was originally made for my writing.

I would attempt to make other blogs for my other interests but with little success.

So I’m putting all interests in one basket and see where that gets us.

So there’ll be posts about writing, learning Korean, a dash of 5e creations, and whatever else catches my eye.

Over a tankard in front of the fire…

They say, in other lands, people meet and converse over boiled bean water, telling how the past tenday has been.

Don’t know what they got against mead or ale.

But pull up a chair and we’ll see if we can do better.

Was cold weather at the start. Been mild today and day before.

Got my arm bit burn, tending the fire at the festival. Doesn’t hurt though. Price you pay, eh?

Not much trade coming thru. Wonder if we’ll get bit more.

Might see about getting that Zemnian to teach me bit of the language. Helps to know a smattering. Can get you more coin, or let you know if they’re planning on running out.

Hmm, guess it was harder than thought, drinking and talking. Or cause nothing much doing. Might try again, though.

WeekendCoffeeShare – Non Fun Super Bowl Day

If we were sharing a drink…

I would tell you how I’m going to watch the Super Bowl even though I want both sides to lose. But I suppose I want the Patriots to lose more.

The weather was a bit chilly at the start of last week, but it’s bright and sunny for the weekend.

I have a new mantra, if you will, for this year. In bullet journaling, people try to have a guide word for the year. An inspiration. Mine started as ‘Focus’. Then I decided to enlarge the idea by having ‘advice’ from role models. Though some might not consider them as such. But I’m weird like that. Bit dark, sorry bout that.

I do have to share a Star Wars fanvid I found. A mix of scenes of the Empire and the First Order put to a edit of War Pigs by Black Sabbath.

Work is a bother. We’re short staffed, plus have people getting sick left and right. Looking forward to things righting themselves, then going to put on for multiple mental health days.

But til then, just trudging along and enjoying the days I do have off. Gonna get another large cuppa. You?

Don’t forget to visit the others.

#WeekendCoffeeShare

We meet over a quick cuppa before work this time.

I had to catch up on some sleep this weekend. I was called on to work an earlier shift on Monday and had to be there before 6:30. Considering my usual time to leave for work is 6:45, yeah it was fun.

Oh, I could leave later for work. But I do public transit so like to give myself plenty of leeway. Plus lets me have breakfast there.

I did go with the best friend to P.F. Chang’s. It’s one of her favorite spots and we’ve been several times. I actually tried something different this time, the surf and turf. I will have to remember to order it again.

Already making plans for my birthday next month. Usually at a lost at what to do, but was hit with an inspiration last week. We have English styled pub called the George & Dragon (Guinness on tap, not much more needed). So going to do a Harry Potter themed shindig there. Should be interesting.

I had a customer who tried to shame me because he didn’t ‘see how someone with a Mexican name doesn’t know Spanish’. I was perturbed for a while. Then rationed that thinking my name had a solely Mexican origin or application was stupid I didn’t need to deal with.

It’s an ongoing thing I must deal with. I am continually amazed that they think they have any right to question me.

But enought of that. Too soon work must begin. Another cookie?

Don’t forget to visit the others.

#WeekendCoffeeShare – A year of books

If we were having beverages, I would be enjoying my off weekend. I get alternating weekends at work and happily first one of the year is freedom.

I had to work New Year’s Eve, but Day had off so oh well.

It’s been so long since I’ve stopped by, I hardly know what to do. It’s going to take me a bit to get back in the swing of things, so bear with me. Have a pastry on me.

I have decided to change up my reading game. Duncan Jones, the director, has decided to start to honor his late father, David, with a Twitter-based book club. The basis of the reading list will be his father’s favorite 100 books. David Jones, of course, being better know as David Bowie. So it promises to be interesting. If you’re on Twitter, #BowieBookClub. This month is Hawksmoor by Peter Ackroyd.

I’ve also decided to add suggestions by Stephen King and President Obama to my reading list, which will reach at least 50 this year.

And I hope to write reviews worth reading of them. The first one will be for a book I spotted when I went to the library to pick up the Ackroyd. Holding is the first novel written by Graham Norton, famous British talk show host. It was unexpected delight of a read and I hope he continues to write.

Another surprise read down the path will be a book about Sherlock Holmes’ older brother, Mycroft. The surprise is that it is co-written by NBA great, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

I let my reading slouch off a bit last year. This the year to turn that around.

So what books are you looking forward to this year?

And don’t forget to go round to the others and see how they are.

Intro to 44

I am me

To be taken or left as you find me.

I shall have no regrets, either way.

Today is my birthday on a loverly cloudy with light sprinkling day in the Valley.

So feel free to order that pastry to help me celebrate.

I try not to ruminate too much on these days. I’m in a decent enough place in my life. No major worries and I have my health.

Birthdays are the days one is given leave “To glory in self like a new monster”, in the words of one James Douglas Morrison. To be a bit selfish and just enjoy being.

Still getting a bit settled in my skin, not sure that will ever be a completed journey and probably shan’t be. But I do like me so that is something.

I shall be dining at a favorite eatery with MBM later today. My usual procrastination has necessated a couple of errands be done but I shall enjoy the day regardless.

Tomorrow MBM and I shall sojourn to the Ren Faire and quite enjoy ourselves. Then the surgery of real life shall commence, as it does. (Come on, lottery. *laughs*)

But I hope you enjoy your day as well. Raise a toast to yourself. Huzzah.

Weekend Coffee Share – 15/1/17

…I need a Sherlock tattoo.

Just saw the season finale. Wow. I need that script to pore over and live over it again and again. Will be seeing it in the theatre.

Yeah, cut my hair today, is why took you a bit to see me. Little too short on one side but good enough.

Oh, you won’t believe what I had to do on Monday. I had to go to the bank and order some checks. Only use them for the rent so only needed one box, but I had a moment of wondering if they actually still did them.

There was something I meant to tell you about last week, something I came across. International Correspondence Writing Month.

Something you might want to share.

Rained some this past week. Was nice and cloudy all day today.

Still need to see Rogue One. I did buy Magnificent Seven blu ray.

Daily writing prompts have slipped a bit but will be catching up. Starting to think up a list of projects to do.

Been a slow week otherwise. Tell you what, let me gets us a refill and we’ll go check on what the others are doing.
