Tea & Coffee 19

It’s been a long time, hasn’t it? Almost forgot how to get here.

One week til NaNo. Adapting The Count of Monte Cristo into a Western. And doing it journal style on an online blog. Should be interesting. Or disastrous, haven’t decided.

Not too much happening. Work about the same.

Oh, but don’t know if I told you. Last month started a meet up thing with friends of mine based on fandoms. Our first one was for Harry Potter and the one last week was for Supernatural. Just a way to geek out and talk about them. Hardest part is scheduling, of course. But we’ve had a decent start I think so we’ll see how it goes.

Let my drabble page on Facebook fall by the wayside, need to get that going. And need to read three books before the end of the year, which shouldn’t be a problem unless my laziness makes it one.

Really need to work on that laziness. Nasty business that.

Looking forward to Star Wars, of course. Had a bit of a headshake over all the nerds mad that they had to watch some football to see the new trailer. I like watching football, so if hadn’t been working, would have had no prob tuning in, despite my team not playing. But to hear them go on, would think they had to walk over hot coals.

The weather is cooling off. Think we’re down to the 80s or something. Gets down to 60s at night. Most of my friends are happy about that. They like the cold. Not me. Will be mourning the final passing of summer this year.

Might have to get the Welcome to Night Vale book, if can find it. I only have like the first twenty or so of the podcasts, need to get around to that as well. Found out Stephen Colbert is a fan so that’s fun.

We will have to meet more often. I shouldn’t let our meetings slip by so.

See what the other bloggers are sharing with their coffee.

…you would find me with a book in my hands. Something that has not been in quite the while.

This week I rediscovered the joy of just walking thru the library and seeing what caught my eye. Seeing some old friends, some I had heard of, and new names.

My library used to have their fiction section divided into categories, but some time back they just mashed everything together by author name. So as you walk down an aisle, you can go from romance to regular fiction to western to mystery and so on. I’m still not sure how I like it. I have given thought to whether I would do my personal library like that or keep it in categories. It does make for an interesting look.

When I left the library that day, I had five books crammed in my bag, three in the crock of my arm, and was reading one. Just a shade bit rusty in walking while reading but did alright.

I’m wanting to write reviews for the books, just can’t seem to grasp how to. I know I’m making it a more difficult process than it truly is, but can’t get a handle on it.

I have started learning a little bit of German this week. Been wanting to learn something of a foreign language and German kept popping up over the course of a couple days. Got an app called Memrise that I’m using.

I also went to a BBQ joint on the other side of town with the MBM. The food was good, the staff great but best of all *le sigh* they had the perfect sweet tea. Now most places, when I order the sweet tea, I have to add more sugar to it to get it to how I like it. I’m a bit of a sugar fiend and have near turned people diabetic just by having them watch me add sugar to my tea.

But I took that first sip and found nirvana. MBM knows of my tendancy, but was willing to risk a sip to witness the perfection. When I asked her, for this post, about how long the taste lasted in her mouth, she replied thusly:

But she isn’t let that hurt our friendship, so all is good.

Found out we lost Rowdy Roddy Piper last night. In my religion (and funny enough, a belief of my family, who is not of my religion) we believe when it’s your time to go, you go. No stopping it. So it was his time, but still not fun. He was a one off. If you don’t know, Piper was a professional wrestler and actor. His most famous role was in the movie They Live. And he played the bagpipes.

Read As You Wish by Cary Elwes earlier this week, so of course the next time The Princess Bride plays was last night at midnight and had to watch at least half so now work on four hours sleep. Ugh.

Not much else this week. We’ll see what the next brings.

Where a review of Zer0es turns into fangirling of Chuck Wendig

zer0esRelease Date: August 18, 2015

Barnes & Noble

Amazon

Chance Dalton – Script kiddie who knows just enough to get himself into trouble.

DeAndre Mitchell – Black hat specializing in stolen credit card numbers.

Aleena Kattan – Hacktivist helping the cause back in the Old Country.

Reagan Stolper – Troll ruining people’s lives for the lulz.

Wade Earthman – Old time BBS operator finding the truth the American people need to know.

Hollis Copper – Fed charged with first collecting, then babysitting, the latest ‘chosen’ team.

Typhon – ??

The pitch comes as no real surprise.

Work for the government for one year, or do far more than that in prison.

Guilt, blackmail, fear, and just plain boredom guarantees all five agree to the deal.

Next stop: The Hunting Lodge.

Thrown together for no reason that they can see, the five Zer0es start the testing and assignments they need to complete to keep out of prison.

But the assignments seem to be linked in ways the team can’t see yet. And nonsensical words begin to appear across their computer screens. Speaking of dragons, giants, a ‘she’ who made the gods flee.

And one word in particular, Typhon, is giving them a bad feeling.

Chuck Wendig is the kind of author that can go the back alley way. Where things aren’t pretty, are half hidden in shadows, and more dangerous than you hoped.

His writing straps you in and doesn’t let you go til the end. It’s best if you clear those hours so you can finish the novel in one sitting. You’ll be happier if you do.

I do have to admit, Zer0es is only the second of his novels that I have read (a situation I do tend to amend) but that is enough to testify to realism of his characters and their own self realization. They accept what and who they are and run with it. Much like the man himself.

I learned about Chuck though a quote about writing.

126e3d2d96a28a8021ef8fa407e1e2d2A search found me the blog post it was taken from and I liked the guy even more. I don’t trust people who don’t know their own madness and he certainly knows and revels in his.

Next came being one of his Twitter followers and the like grew.

I managed to read his novel Blackbirds before going to see him at our local Comicon this year. I had been forwarding tweets of his to me best mate for some time, so she was more than agreeable to coming with to his panel (she has a similar appreciation for his ‘unique’ outlook). His was the only panel we even tried to make and he did not disappoint.

I knew I wanted to buy his The Kick ass Writer book at the Con and then see about getting him to sign it. We got there in time where it was just us and him for a couple of minutes. I got my book signed, then both me and her got ARCs (Advanced Reader’s Copy) for Zer0es, autographed as well. He also joined in on our collective crazy, which is not always an immediate thing for other people. And then he favorited my tweet about it.

This was meant to be just a straight up review for Zer0es, I swear. I was going to write up here, then link it to wherever. It was going to be a thank you for the unexpected gift of the book, a good turn.

But like the title says, it turned into an instance of fangirling and I am not ashamed. Chuck ain’t just a good author, he’s a great guy. Some artists you feel a connection with through the glimpses of themselves that they show you, through the effort they put forth toward you. I will forever love John Rhys-Davies for inquiring as to how I made my living as if we were at a cocktail party when I got his autograph. Stephen King and Clive Barker were the two writers I felt like I could manage such small talk with. And now Chuck as well.

So do yourself a favor, pick up Zer0es. Then go to Chuck’s blog and find the rest of his books. But be ready for the real. Cause he can’t do it any other way.

… I would say nice to see you after a bit.

Not too much has happened. Went and saw Magic Mike for the second time with a friend of mine. Then we went over to another friend’s house and had an Outlander marathon, joined by MBM. It was basically a perv day and we decided we need to have more of them.

Taking a break from writing for a moment and doing some reading. Haven’t done that since I got thru the Harry Potter series late winter of this year.

Been reading The Killer Angels (again) by Michael Shaara and it’s prequel, Gods and Generals, by his son Jeff. More than likely going to read the rest of Jeff’s novels at some point. Very good.

But what got me on this reading jaunt is Zer0es by Chuck Wendig. You’ve heard me go on about him before, and this so didn’t disappoint. I’m thinking of starting a book journal and doing up review for here. Just hard to not give too much of the plot away, but still enough to interest others.

Did get another cool book, How to Be a Superhero by Mark Edlitz. Has a number of interview with actors who have played superheroes, sidekicks, villians, and anti-heroes. As you can see by the pictures, it’s an impressive list. And more in sidebar interviews in the back.

Other than that, like I said, not too much. Just motoring along.

And a Happy 4th of July to ya!

And it figures I have work but what can ya do.

Went and saw Magic Mike XXL yesterday. Oh yeah that was a good time. Going to see it again next Sat with some friends. It was funny and of course very prettah. Lots of little nods to stuff in the actors’ lives.

Camp NaNo ain’t going good, but there’s time.

Not much this week. Finally seen an ep of Outlander cause of a sequence I’d heard about. Main female was annoying but couple fellas did very nice.
And kilts and accents always good. Not that a nicely done skirt is anything to sneeze at either.

There’s a few bits of nice scenery at work, but you can’t count on when you’re going to see them. ‘Nice scenery’ is my work code word for pretty lads. They can make a work day go by better.

But that’s true in life in general. Hence, Magic Mike.

Loki – Day 2 – Lore & MCU

Admit it. When I say ‘Loki’, this is what first comes into your mind.

tom1Many Lokians (that’s what we call ourselves, those of us who are partial to Him as opposed to Thor or Odin) rail against this fact and grouse about how hard it is to find pics that aren’t from the MCU.

But for my part, I am fine with it. I have two shirts for Marvel!Loki and a key chain on my bag of his helmet, amoung a few other trinkets.

But let me give you the differences between the Loki, and by extension Thor, of the MCU and the Loki I will be mostly talking about this month. (And for the record, I don’t think Loki is much bothered by the association. I can’t see Him getting ticked about having His name being screamed out by hundreds of people rubbing one off. And He is a shape shifter by nature anyway. But I digress.)

First, a bit about my religion. The name it is best known by is Asatru, which translates to ‘true to the Aesir’. The Aesir are the predominant family line of the Norse gods, Odin and Thor’s people. The other major group is the Vanir, to which Frey and Freya belong.

Tucked away in a corner is those of us who throw our lot in more with the giants than the gods. There Loki’s family is seen as the main family group and are called the Rokkr by some.

Since I have sworn myself to Loki and not the Aesir, I do not call myself Asatru. I use the term ‘Norse Heathen’ on occasion but more often say ‘Lokian’. That is a peculiarity to us, as a follower of Thor is called a Thorsman and for Odin, an Odinsman.

(A word, at this time, about my use of capitalization in this post. In the Christian faith, ‘God’ is always capitalized. When I speak of the gods in Asatru, I myself use a lowercase ‘g’. The reason for this is I regard ‘God’ to be as much a title as a name.

It is along the lines of Frey and Freya, in my opinion. Those are not the names of those particular deities, but are as titles. ‘Frey’ translates to ‘Lord’ and ‘Freya’ is ‘Lady’. We do not know Freya’s true name, while Frey’s is ‘Ing’.

So I do not capitalize the word ‘god’, but I do keep to the habit of capitalizing pronouns that refer to the gods and the giants. But I will not do so when referring to the MCU. Confused yet?)

Loki is not son, adopted or otherwise, to Odin. Most hold to the belief that they are blood brothers. Which means Loki is not brother to Thor. They are most often traveling companions, when Loki has not given Thor cause to threaten Him with death.

In the first movie, Loki discovers he is a frost giant, not an Asgardian as he believed. His father is Laufey, king of Jotunheim.

In Norse cosmology, there are nine worlds, bound together by the branches and roots of the great world tree, Yggdrasil. You see Yggdrasil in the credits of Thor.

I have to tell you, when I saw Yggdrasil depicted as the cosmos, time just stopped for a second. It was just so right and was worth the forgiveness of many sins of the movie.

Jotunheim is one of these worlds, as are Asgard and Midgard. And it is a realm of giants, as jotun is another name for giants, but not the frost giants. They dwell in Niflheim, one of the two primordial realms, the other being the realm of the fire thurses (another word for giants) called Muspellheim. You can glimpse them along with the other worlds in The Dark World.

Loki does have a parent named Laufey, but it is His mother. His father’s name is Farbauti. And neither are frost giants. Laufey is an island giant and Farbauti is a fire thurse. Loki is a bit of an aberration in that He carries His mother’s name as opposed to His father’s. Thor is more in keeping in line with tradition as He is Thor Odinson. Some Asatru who claim alliegeance to a particular god will do this as well. If you look at this week’s drabble pic, you will see it was taken by Steve Odinson. A female would use dottir.

Frigg is really Thor’s stepmother. Thor’s mother is Jord, a giant associated with the earth. Odin’s mother is also a giant, named Bestla.

bannerAs you see in a past Facebook banner of mine, both Loki and Thor are gingers. One of Loki’s nicknames is ‘Flame hair’. But there is historical evidence of Thor as being seen as a blond in at least one instance and there are Lokians who saw Him as being dark-haired before Tom came along.

As opposed to the movies, Thor is married to Sif, who is not a warrior and has long blonde hair. They have a daughter together, while Sif has a son from another and Thor has two sons with others.

As for Loki, *sighs*, let’s get to the part you rarely hear about first. He is married to Sigyn, who was a ward of Frey and Freya’s father, Njord. They have two sons, Narvi and Vali. He might also have two daughters from a first marriage, depending on the stories you hear.

Now the parts everyone goes on about.

slepnirSlepnir. He makes a very brief appearance in the first movie, Odin is astride him when he comes to retrieve Thor and the others from Jotunheim. Yes, he does have eight legs. And yes, Loki is his mother. Now for the story behind it.

A man arrived in Asgard and offered to build impenetrable walls around the halls in the space of six months, if I remember right, with only his horse as help. But he wanted the sun, the moon, and Freya’s hand in marriage as payment. Loki convinced the Aesir to go along with it, doubting he could achieve the goal.

Well, the man did better than expected and was three days from winning the bet. The gods demanded Loki fix this, since it had been His idea. Loki realized the help provided by the horse, so He transformed Himself into a mare to lure the horse away. When the man discovered the disappearance, he raged against the gods and revealed himself as a giant. Thor dispatched the giant and the Aesir had the protection of the walls.

And yes, some months later Loki did return with Slepnir in tow. He does not have a thing for horses. It was the best He could come up with to save His neck.

And now the better known of his children, often referred to as the monstrous children.

Before Loki married to Sigyn, he was consort to Angrboda, a giant of no small prestige. They have three children, though you will most often see only two of them.

Fenrir-2Fenrir (or Fenris) Lokison, the Great Wolf. Bound out of fear of the destruction He will bring.

Jormungandr-2Jormungandr, the Midgard Serpent. Seen as a threat as well and consigned to the ocean. Of a size as to be wrapped around the whole of Midgard, It clasps It’s tail in It’s mouth.

They are even represented in the movies.

picesBut there is a sister, one who appears less frequently with Her siblings in the fan art.

HelHel (or Hela) Half-Rotten, ruler of Helheim, where most will go after death. Especially those who die the ‘straw death’ of old age or disease.

So this is my long winded, though ultimately brief, write up about Loki Laufeyson. There’s loads more, of course, and we’ll see how much I get to. But it’s a start about the Loki of Asatru.

loki banner

And it’s not to say I won’t talk about other pop culture aspects of Him.
