I would tell you how I’m going to watch the Super Bowl even though I want both sides to lose. But I suppose I want the Patriots to lose more.
The weather was a bit chilly at the start of last week, but it’s bright and sunny for the weekend.
I have a new mantra, if you will, for this year. In bullet journaling, people try to have a guide word for the year. An inspiration. Mine started as ‘Focus’. Then I decided to enlarge the idea by having ‘advice’ from role models. Though some might not consider them as such. But I’m weird like that. Bit dark, sorry bout that.
I do have to share a Star Wars fanvid I found. A mix of scenes of the Empire and the First Order put to a edit of War Pigs by Black Sabbath.
Work is a bother. We’re short staffed, plus have people getting sick left and right. Looking forward to things righting themselves, then going to put on for multiple mental health days.
But til then, just trudging along and enjoying the days I do have off. Gonna get another large cuppa. You?
I had to catch up on some sleep this weekend. I was called on to work an earlier shift on Monday and had to be there before 6:30. Considering my usual time to leave for work is 6:45, yeah it was fun.
Oh, I could leave later for work. But I do public transit so like to give myself plenty of leeway. Plus lets me have breakfast there.
I did go with the best friend to P.F. Chang’s. It’s one of her favorite spots and we’ve been several times. I actually tried something different this time, the surf and turf. I will have to remember to order it again.
Already making plans for my birthday next month. Usually at a lost at what to do, but was hit with an inspiration last week. We have English styled pub called the George & Dragon (Guinness on tap, not much more needed). So going to do a Harry Potter themed shindig there. Should be interesting.
I had a customer who tried to shame me because he didn’t ‘see how someone with a Mexican name doesn’t know Spanish’. I was perturbed for a while. Then rationed that thinking my name had a solely Mexican origin or application was stupid I didn’t need to deal with.
It’s an ongoing thing I must deal with. I am continually amazed that they think they have any right to question me.
But enought of that. Too soon work must begin. Another cookie?
If we were having beverages, I would be enjoying my off weekend. I get alternating weekends at work and happily first one of the year is freedom.
I had to work New Year’s Eve, but Day had off so oh well.
It’s been so long since I’ve stopped by, I hardly know what to do. It’s going to take me a bit to get back in the swing of things, so bear with me. Have a pastry on me.
I have decided to change up my reading game. Duncan Jones, the director, has decided to start to honor his late father, David, with a Twitter-based book club. The basis of the reading list will be his father’s favorite 100 books. David Jones, of course, being better know as David Bowie. So it promises to be interesting. If you’re on Twitter, #BowieBookClub. This month is Hawksmoor by Peter Ackroyd.
I’ve also decided to add suggestions by Stephen King and President Obama to my reading list, which will reach at least 50 this year.
And I hope to write reviews worth reading of them. The first one will be for a book I spotted when I went to the library to pick up the Ackroyd. Holding is the first novel written by Graham Norton, famous British talk show host. It was unexpected delight of a read and I hope he continues to write.
Another surprise read down the path will be a book about Sherlock Holmes’ older brother, Mycroft. The surprise is that it is co-written by NBA great, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
I let my reading slouch off a bit last year. This the year to turn that around.
So what books are you looking forward to this year?
And don’t forget to go round to the others and see how they are.
Today is my birthday on a loverly cloudy with light sprinkling day in the Valley.
So feel free to order that pastry to help me celebrate.
I try not to ruminate too much on these days. I’m in a decent enough place in my life. No major worries and I have my health.
Birthdays are the days one is given leave “To glory in self like a new monster”, in the words of one James Douglas Morrison. To be a bit selfish and just enjoy being.
Still getting a bit settled in my skin, not sure that will ever be a completed journey and probably shan’t be. But I do like me so that is something.
I shall be dining at a favorite eatery with MBM later today. My usual procrastination has necessated a couple of errands be done but I shall enjoy the day regardless.
Tomorrow MBM and I shall sojourn to the Ren Faire and quite enjoy ourselves. Then the surgery of real life shall commence, as it does. (Come on, lottery. *laughs*)
But I hope you enjoy your day as well. Raise a toast to yourself. Huzzah.
Just saw the season finale. Wow. I need that script to pore over and live over it again and again. Will be seeing it in the theatre.
Yeah, cut my hair today, is why took you a bit to see me. Little too short on one side but good enough.
Oh, you won’t believe what I had to do on Monday. I had to go to the bank and order some checks. Only use them for the rent so only needed one box, but I had a moment of wondering if they actually still did them.
How has today found you? Well within parameters, I hope.
As you see, it’s a bit cloudy today. But not rain clouds.
We have made it past the first week of the new year. But the last one has left it’s mark.
I had the TV volume turned all the way, with the closed captioning on, one morning whilst getting ready for work. It was on the CBS morning show just by accident.
Happened to glance over to see an run of old pictures of Rita Moreno and the text was high points in her career. Of course, my immediate thought was that she had passed and was so relieved to find out she was there to chat up her new project. Realized I had post 2016 death fears and probably will for some time.
I did not know she had been with Marlon Brando for eight years. Will have to look for her autobiography at the library. She’s still a sharp wit and great sense of humor.
I came across one of those anecdotal posts on the Facebook, this one was of men relating instances they were subjected to sexist comments and behavior. It is easy to forget there is another side to that coin.
My interest in bullet journaling continues. I spent a day off working it on whilst listening to the audio book of The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith. It was a good day.
I’m keeping track of the days til September 1st in it. If you’re a Harry Potter fan, this year will be 19 years later, and Albus Severus Potter will be off to Hogwarts.
I’m trying to write every day. Bought a book with daily prompts in it. Had to catch up the 3rd and the 4th a day late but been good since then.
I saw the first signs of Spring. The Liberty tax service sign twirlers came out. April is not far behind.
The first episode of Sherlock was brilliant, as to be expected. I won’t be home yet when it airs tonight, so have to see if can be up at 2:30 for a repeat. Might catch Rosemary and Thyme, a mystery series from some years back on the BBC.
I’m in the mood for a scone now. Oh, I found this map that shows the distribution of how ‘scone’ is pronounced in the British Isles. I rhyme it with ‘gone’ myself.
Another work day soon to begin and I should be off. Don’t forget to have a chat with the others.
Welcome and thank fuck 2016 is over with! Now to see what 2017 brings.
It’s been raining last couple of days and today. Adds the holiday chill to things.
Sherlock’s fourth season starts today! By all accounts it is going to be great.
A great show of how I am is that I’ve been vacillating between Harry Potter weekend on Freeform and The Walking Dead marathon on AMC this weekend.
New Year’s Eve was nice. Went to a friend’s house as is the usual. More subdued from previous years. I’m usually in charge of the firepits. Fella saw fit to try and ‘help’. I must admit I was not happy with that and gave him quite the frosty reaction. I tend to have a set idea on how certain things should be done and do not look kindly on those who throw in without asking my leave.
Having a makeup Christmas with the family since I was working on the actual weekend. Waiting on the ham now.
I do hope 2017 is better but don’t hold out much hope for such. Just have to muscle though to the other side.
Discovered that a member of my team, the Dallas Cowboys, was born in England and actually went to high school with Daniel Radcliffe from Harry Potter.
First year with using the bullet journal. I’m feeling good about it and think it just might stick, knock on wood.
Well, I do hope you and yours have a fine year. Find those moments to enjoy.
…and it’s back to the hot drinks today. The highest it’s supposed to get this week is 70, and today about 63. Which I know is nothing to many, but is on the cold side for here.
Not to much has happened this week. Work remains meh.
Bought me best mate another present, and missed out on the Yule party with some other friends on Saturday cause work schedule was changed.
And ugh, someone beat me to the laundry room this morning and took up all three washers. Which considering I got there right after six in the morning lets you know how anxious they were to get there. And best part, when dryer time came, two were running but one was done with a few clothes in it. Which, of course, turns out didn’t belong with the other two, so could have taken them out and had my clothes dried over 30 minutes sooner. #apartmentlifeproblems
Good for me, my usual time to leave gets me to work an hour and half early (bus rider), so had some wiggle room.
At some point will need to see Star Wars Rogue One. Hearing great things about it. And love all the memes with ‘spoilers’ on its sequel, which of course is A New Hope.
Was able to tell someone in one of my Fb groups about the coffee share. She wanted to join a blog collective ( and yes my geekdom had to fight past Borg Collective for that) so I told her about this. Fingers crossed.
Decided to try Milwordy next year. A million words written in one year. Needless to say, this will include ALL words. Blog posts, fanfic, NaNo. Breaks down to 2,740 words a day. Within the realm, provided I sit my arse down and do it. And find the projects.
No resolutions, just goals.
Time will tell. Til next week.
(I feel like I should come up with some kinda and off, you know. Hmm. For now, to paraphrase the original Weekend Update team, Good Day and Have a Pleasant Tomorrow.)
.. I would remark on how our weather has changed. It is expected to be mid-ish70s all this week. So if we sit out in the sun, I just might offer you an iced beverage.
Work was actually different this week. I had to work a morning shift (6:30 – 3:00). It was interesting. Time actually seemed to move differently compared to my usual shift (12:00-8:30). An okay experience but not sure I would want to make it be a regular thing.
I have created another blog as a tool to explore my religion, Heathenry. Both to see what it is I believe and as a way to learn to articulate it to others. I read the bus and occasionally you get someone wanting to share their god with you. Just want to be able to return the favor, as it were.
In that view, I saw two of a six part series on PBS World about pilgrimages. It was called ‘Sacred Journeys’ and the two I saw were the main pilgrimages for Muslims and for Hindus. The interesting part on a personal level was as the pilgrims were talking about their faiths, it made me wonder of my relationship to my faith. With any luck, that desire will continue and lead me to the questions I want to answer.
But enough seriousness. I sadly missed the Harry Potter Yule Balls that were held nationwide at Barnes & Noble. I’ve heard mixed reviews online of how they went, but have a feeling the one at my usual store would have been quite nice.
I’ve bought one present for me best mate and have an eye on a second and possible third. Not sure what to get the family of course.
I have two books picked out for my reading challenge next year. Might try and swing for more than just the max two a month, we’ll see.
Saw a daily prompt writing journal might pick up for next year. Work on gaining a few habits in ’17.
2017 in just a couple more weeks. Rarely have I been more ready to put a year behind me. Not for a personal reason, of course. Just this crazy year that never should have been.
I feel like getting some ice cream, it’s such a nice day. What say, cup or cone?
We’re in a quick cold snap right now. Yesterday was mid 80s, today is supposed to be 67 and tomorrow 77 before going back to up to the 80s the next day.
Ah, the first full week of A-Z Blog done. And somehow I’m managing to keep up. And happily, I’ve managed to turn a few people on to fandoms of mine.
Work is blah, isn’t it always?
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (West Coast Edition) opened this week. Saw a bit on a video from the opening ceremonies. They did a cool light show over Hogwarts Castle in it, with the colors and crests of the Houses. Of course ours was the coolest. Couldn’t find the short clip I saw, but starts about 9:25 on this vid.
When I win the lottery (ha ha), one of the first things would be to go to the Orlando one. I’ve read how theirs is and sounds so good. Buy myself some school robes and a wand, then go to the California one.
I did a question on my Facebook, about what things would have to be in your dream home.
In mine, I would have to have a proper study and library. I’m talking like Victorian here. Dark wood and patterned carpet. A small fireplace. Sliding doors separating the study from the library. A nice sturdy desk with a hidden drawer or two. There’d be a card catalog for the library, cause I’m geeky like that. A chair could fall asleep in.
There would also have to be a geek’s lair. For my small collection of collectables, comics, and DVDs. A few posters on the walls. Some manner of table in the middle for games and such. Maybe even a kitchenette set up in one corner so wouldn’t have to go thru the house for snacks. What would be in your dream house?
Oh, and Star Wars The Force Awakens came out this week. Went to the store after work first day and got it. I was a little tired so hadn’t planned on watching any of it that night. But didn’t have to work the next day, so when 1 or 2 in the morning rolled around and I was still up, decided to watch the bonus disc. I do so enjoy bonus features. But first, had to sing the (not quite the whole) theme song before could open the plastic. Twice.
I think it was this week got first look at The Killing Joke animated video. For those who don’t know, The Killing Joke is one of the most famous Batman graphic novels. If you saw The Dark Knight, at the end where Joker is talking about how all it takes is that one moment to push someone over the line as he did with Harvey Dent and tried to do with the passengers on the boats, this is where Christopher Nolan got that from.
The Joker gives Commissioner Gordon ‘one bad day’ in an attempt to push him over the edge. It also has an origin story for Joker that has come to be considered canon, even though the graphic novel isn’t meant to be.
The cherry on top of this is who is doing the voices for Batman and Joker. The best voice duo: Kevin Convoy and Mark Hamill. The ones who became the voices of Batman and Joker for so many of us via Batman the Animated Series. Us fans wouldn’t have been happy with anyone else doing the voices.
Forgot to tell you I saw Batman vs Superman with me best mate end of last month. I had read a fan review that just tore the movie apart, so had that going thru my head as watched it. But it was better than I was expecting. And even that review gave a nod to Ben Affleck in the role, and especially with Jeremy Iron’s Alfred. And the funny thing is the actors who played Thomas and Martha Wayne in the flashback were Jeffery Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan, who I would see on the following Sunday in the season finale of The Walking Dead.
You remember how I was going on about Negan coming. Jeffrey played Negan and Lauren is one of the regular cast who finds herself in his clutches. And the finale ended in a cliffhanger that is driving fans crazy. And I admit, I was not happy either. But a little thought and I did agree that the reveal should be the start of the new chapter of next season and not the end of this chapter. And most of us have an idea of how things will play out. It was such an anticipated scene that people wanted their cake right then.
I am doing a little prelim work on my Camp NaNo for July, and even for NaNo proper in November.
I bought a shirt online and it came in couple days ago. What think?
Oh, did you hear the radio? On Sunday mornings I listen to ‘Breakfast with The Beatles’ . Today is the 46th anniversary of Paul McCartney announcing he was leaving the band and they became no more.
