Magic Realism

Quote I just came upon. What think ye?

“Well, I really want to encourage a kind of fantasy, a kind of magic. I love the term magic realism, whoever invented it – I do actually like it because it says certain things. It’s about expanding how you see the world. I think we live in an age where we’re just hammered, hammered to think this is what the world is. Television’s saying, everything’s saying ‘That’s the world.’ And it’s not the world. The world is a million possible things.”

Tea and Coffee #4

image

I would be not moving when you walked up. Long day yesterday. But rather good.

It was my birthday this week, 42nd. Went around town getting free food and drink. Got well wishes and prettah pics on my Fb feed and texts.

And best of all, the third season of Vikings began.

If you don’t know of the show, by the gods why not? It’s on the History Channel and is a fictional retelling of the life of Ragnar Lothbrok, who lived during the Viking Era in Scandinavia. The acting,  the action, and production are just amazing. Lots of blood, but more towards the realistic.

It’s created by Michael Hirst, who did HBO’s The Tudors and the Elizabeth movies with Cate Blanchett.

It is just the best show. Though many get hung up on historical inaccuracies, I just enjoy it at face value and delight in it. It is particularly fun to one of my religion.

Oh, we haven’t talked about that, have we? We’ll go into specifics another time, but I am a Heathen who follows the Norse gods. You heard of the movie, Thor? Those gods, though obviously not that way.

What else happened?  Not that much else. Trying not to think about how the lads from Supernatural are in town but I have not the wherewithal to see them. But I will have my first fic in the fandom up by day’s end so there’s that.

A bit of personal philosophy I’ve discovered. “Life doesn’t care what kind of day you’re having.” A reassuring thought I find.

This week has been a bit of whirlwind,  it’s nice to just rest a bit.

Oh! And soon my best friend is getting sorted into Pottermore. I’m not sure which she’ll be.

I’m Slytherin meself, thank you very much. Which surprises no one who knows me. In fact, I came out Slytherin in an online quiz I took long before the movies came out and I had no knowledge of the books. You know what you are?

And speaking of geekdom, Jason Momoa as Aquaman. Very nice look.

Oh, and one last thing. Just heard a song this week by Gregg Allman’s boy, Devon. Song just asking for sex to be done to it.

See who else is having coffee.

Drabble: Cathedral

image

My family had built the cathedral generations ago. It was considered our crowning achievement. They said it would stand forever,  a fitting tribute to the greatness of the family. And it did stand for centuries, against many odds.

Leave to us to ultimately be the ones to being about it’s ruin.

Oh, we didn’t do it in one fell swoop. No grand gesture. It was slow,  creeping like the waters of a river, eating at its banks. Slow so no one noticed it happening, til it was too late to stop it. To save the cathedral.

To save my family.

Tea and Coffee #3

If you were having coffee and I was having tea…

It is late, the cafe is empty except for us.

It has been a crazy day, I had to call my best friend for a lift home due to circumstances beyond my control. And for some reason, my self acquired stutter rose to a prominence and duration never achieved before.

I do try not to smile too broad as I tell you of the lovely lad who kinda flirted with me and whom I kinda flirted back at. It was a very brief encounter.  And I say lad for I do believe he was near half my age ( knocking on 42). You may say he was only being friendly,  as I was in his place of employment and he took my order. But I will have my memory, thank you.

I discovered there exists a convention called SNOWBIRD EXTRAVAGANZA.     It was a curious discovery.

Not much else has happened today. A fan fic started, another is only a plot bunny.

I did buy the Dungeon & Dragons Starter kit.

We’ll see what the future holds.

#WeekendCoffeeShare started at Part Time Monster.

The Blogging A – Z April Challenge and what I’m using it for.

So you remember how I mentioned my interest in D & D and was probably going to use it to work up a fantasy story.

Well, I think I’ve got another tool to use.

I came across The Blogging from A – Z April Challenge. You blog every day, excepting Sundays, about subjects that start with each sequential letter of the alphabet.

Some use a theme for the whole month and I was leaning toward doing that. But could not think of what theme I would be interested in that would cover all 26 letters.

And then today it hit me. Someone had done a theme in the past of fictional characters and I thought about using that. Then the idea formed to do elements of that fantasy idea.

Now, the fun part is I have no ideas about plot or world type or anything. Not beyond the anti-hero aspect I mentioned.  So these entries will be highly cliche and derivative of fantasies I’ve enjoyed (Dragonlance and Drizzt Do’Urden to name a couple).

It will be done in broad stokes and who knows how much Mary Sue. But it’s a start to getting ideas down and workable.

Fingers crossed.

Drabble: The Path.

image

The way was deceptively easy. I could feel it. Despite the old woman’s words, I was in no hurry to trod on the trail. But her twisted smile as she spoke to me had said it all. There was no choice. If I wanted to win the kingdom, I would have to make the journey.

My hand on my sword, I walked the path. Each step a cautious one. Still the dart found it’s mark. My body fell to the side. The world darkened and I soon learned the reason for those twisted shapes, covered by the too green moss

Tea & Coffee #2

If you were having coffee and I was having tea…

Sorry it’s been so long since we’ve gotten together. Reality as usual is no friend of mine. Though I was busy with something productive,  so there’s that.

I’ve been wanting to get into D&D lately. I feel the urge every now and again but the universe put a few more hints about it in my face. We shall see.

The light of my week was stopping at the blade store at the mall. There was a copy of Strider’s sword and Aragorn’s reforged sword (I know, I should know their names). But what made me catch my breath was the copy of The Kurgan’s sword from Highlander.  Another reason to win the lottery.

Did another chapter of my slash fic. I really need to be more consistent with it.

The bumps in the road are smaller this week, always good. Still just need to win the lottery, though.

The Super Bowl was good, though Seattle should have won. Not that I’m a fan of theirs, I go Dallas, but I always root for the NFC.

What darkness lies in the soul
With ne’er a candle to hold
Yet a smile shines out bright
Mirrored by the sharpened knife.

Yeah, I guess I should warn you I can get like that.  No worries, though. Trust me.

See who else is having coffee.

D & D and Ficcing.

Yup, Dungeons & Dragons. It’s still around and kicking.

I have podcast episodes of three games and always end up wanting to play after listening.  Despite having no one to play with.

I am close to just paying the starter set just to have it. And have the thought to use it to work up a fantasy story, possibly for NaNo this year.

Only problem is I end up going for the bad guy a lot of times. And would probably try to write from his point of view, and not really have him go good.

I suppose I can slide him toward anti-hero. And have him get the girl.

Course the real challenge is the world building. How much to steal from real life, how much to make up. What kind of names to use.

The starter set would be a good jumping off point for that. Be interesting to see what I could accomplish with it.
Give me a focus if nothing else.

Plans

So I started a Facebook group trying to get some of my friends into doing a bit of writing. A drabble group.

Owe one friend two fanfics, an acquaintance a sequel to a different fanfics, and the continuation of yet another fanfic.

Plus I have half a mind of trying to do something with this.

Yeah,  Proud Slytherin.

Just need to get my determination to match my ability.
