Tea & Coffee #31 – Valentine

Well hello.

Today it shall be hot chocolate for me, though let’s face it, the real chocolate day is tomorrow when they go on sale. 😉

Here in Arizona, it is also a birthday. Our statehood day – February 14, 1912.

All last week was warm weather, low 80s. Though it still dips down to the 50s at night, so still wearing the thermal under my work shirt for the moment.

I found a list of prompts for February on Fb so have been doing that. Managing to do each day’s, might just keep it up each month if can keep finding the lists.

Not too much going on. Work is blah only cause it’s work.

I might be getting a tattoo this month. If do, be going to a buddy of mine’s shop for it. Will present the proof if applicable.

I find myself just wanting to enjoy this day. Had a person get pissy with me last night at work, so looking to balance that out today.

Enjoy the day with your someone, or yourself. Cause in the end, it’s still just another day you’re alive and holds the promise of every other day.

Visit the others.

And now for your musical interlude.

A haunting by Neal Cassady (as protrayed by Thomas Jane)

I take the bus to work.

One day, going a different way, I saw a sign that said ‘Artist Studios’ with a For Rent sign underneath. There was a fleeting wondering about them but nothing more.

Today I took what I thought was this same route and remembered the signs. I started looking out the window but realized I had passed the most likely place for the studios. Again, the vague wondering of what they were like.

Then a memory hit me. Of a movie clip I had seen of Thomas Jane playing the beat writer Neal Cassady (a quick check before I started writing this showed that the movie is The Last Time I Committed Suicide).

The clip was of Cassady at his typewriter. He used butcher paper on a roll and fed it through his machine so he wouldn’t have to stop to change pages. It started me thinking of all those portrayals of New York writers, writing in the heat. A fan that just manages to move the air some, a fridge with nothing but beer. Late nights and sleeping most of the day.

And suddenly I wanted to do that. To rent one of those studios and live there during the summer. Maybe use an assumed name, make up a past. Buy a typewriter from one of the second-hand shops around there. Get old jeans and shirts. Just a small fridge and a desk fan. Maybe a cot to sleep on. Nothing I would mind if it got stolen. The idea kept returning to me throughout the day.

Just move out of my place with all of its distractions and force myself to work. To be a mad, desperate writer. Instead of the Paris cafe, the New York rundown apartment. Not the open retreat in the woods, but the small space in the city.

Whether the studios are just meant to be used as a work space during the day with no real amenities or could be used as crashpad is unknown. How long I could make the fantasy last is also unknown. Plus the lack of available funds is a detriment.

But damn if I wouldn’t want to try it, just once.

So, enjoying the bit of a warm snap we’re having here in the Valley? Today is the last of it I believe. Cold weather back tomorrow or next.

Hope things are well enough with you.

Not too much of note this week. I did finish a promised fan fic for a friend of mine. Need a few more to do yet.

Working a bit on my Camp NaNo, just getting ideas worked out. A fanfic based off Harry Potter. Changing major canon stuff, so have to figure out why they’re different in a believable way. I even ordered cheapie extra copies of the first two books to deface with notes to make it easier. It’s going to be for the July session, so have a bit of time. And I resigned up for Pottermore and got my House and wand locked down. I wanted to redo my wand but my phone was being stupid so just kept my old one. Never changing my House, of course. And I kinda like the name of the North America magic school, Ilvermorny.

I did sign up for the A-Z Challenge this week. My second year. I know my topic, just working on the angle for the letters.
Working this weekend, always fun. But then it means I get next weekend off. Which means Sunday free for The Super Bowl. And also means Saturday free to go to the Chocolate Affaire downtown. We have it every year. Vendors, live music, food. And scads of chocolates. Even get ferried to the chocolate factory down the way. Always a nice and chocolatey time.

I’ll probably be getting a new phone next month. They switched networks some while back and thinking that’s why reception’s been crappy for me. Least I hope that is. Don’t have one in mind, need to look around some.

Been a rather quiet week of just working and not much else. So leave you with a little music for today.

Share a cuppa with the others.

…I would be nicely stretched in the chair, cup in hand and cookie nearby.

There would be a bit of sigh as we talk about the latest loss from the music world, Glenn Frey. I love the Eagles and was at work when I found out about his passing. I couldn’t believe it, moreso with it being the latest in such a line of losses. Fingers cross it will be quiet on that front for a bit.

I’ll be watching the NFL Championship games later today. Luckily I’ll have the weekend of the Super Bowl off. My team isn’t in it, The Dallas Cowboys, so I usually root for the NFC team. One of my co-workers is a Arizona Cardinals and one of my managers is a Denver Broncos fan and there is a chance those teams will meet in the Super Bowl, so that is going to be an interesting time if it comes to pass. I got my favorite dip, which I used to be only able to find at the store across the street from my old work. Happily, it’s now at the one down the street from my place so yay.

Another fun thing, is that after the second game, The Return of The X-Files! Did you watch it, back in the day? I was such a fan nd saw the first movie in the theatres. Admittedly, I tampered off my view towards the end of the show’s run and didn’t see the second movie. But with so many of the people who were involved returning for the limited series, I gotta watch. Sadly though, I’ll only see half of the episodes, since I’ll be at work for the others. Will have to swing for the DVD when it comes out. They’ve already released the first season on blu ray, so will have to get that.

I got myself a new wallet yesterday. My poor old one was very much on its last legs and I had to admit it was time to retire it, as you can see.

Is it bad that I’m thinking of trying to come up with a Slytherin tattoo? Just a minimalist one. To add the list of other tats I’d fancy getting. *eyeroll* I have bout half a dozen now. Not sure I know any people who only have one tattoo.

If you don’t have any, it’s one of those things where you forget how much it hurts and you keep doing it, kinda like childbirth from what I hear. I remember how I described the pain at the time, but not the actual pain so much. The mind is lovely for things like that.

For you what are on the East Coast, hope you made it out okay.

See who else is sharing coffee.

Tea & Coffee – #28 – Smile that it happened

image

The year is scarce two full weeks old, and yet already so much loss.

I was flippant in my mentioning of the passing of Lemmy Kilmister and need to rectify that. Lemmy, if you do not know, was the bassist and lead singer for the metal band Motorhead. Straight forward, no frills, booze and smokes metal music. He turned 70 on December 24th, 2015, discovered he had an aggressive form of cancer on the 26th, and left us on the 28th.  He once did a couple months stint as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix. He was a no bullshit, tell ya off if need be, real regular guy.

https://youtu.be/7lHqG3sj1Fw

Then, on the 10th of this month, it was the man of many faces. Ziggy Stardust, The Thin White Duke, The Goblin King. David Bowie, also from cancer, at age 69. A musician, actor, and visionary of a type. He didn’t let himself be content with just doing things the way everyone else did. He pushed and pulled at the boundaries and dared others to follow.

https://youtu.be/FNAIruZEKHo

And, again at age 69 of cancer, Alan Rickman on the 14th. The mad Sheriff of Nottingham. Annoyed Metatron. Devious Hans Gruber. Poor Marvin. And most recently, for so many of us, my Head of House, The Half-Blood Prince, Professor Severus Snape. By all accounts, a gentle and gracious man who would bend over backwards for his friends at the drop of a hat.

One after the other in such quick succession has left many of us quite shell shocked and a bit numb. That it was all from cancer is the cruel twist that will further link these three fine men.

Going to raise a cup for them at my geek meeting on Tuesday and say a few words. You are never truly gone so long as your name is remembered. And these names will ever be remembered.

I leave you with a tweet I saw after Bowie’s death, but one that could be an equal tribute to all three.

Malloy O’Meara (@sexoskeleton):
Honor Bowie by doing that great/terrifying/weird/creative thing that only you can do. Even if you’re scared. Today is a good day to start.

See what the others are sharing at this week’s coffee share.

Tea & Coffee – #27

coffee-tea

I would say hello to you on the first sunny, warm day we have after about a week or so of rain and clouds. Actually didn’t wear my jacket on the way in. Still brought it with me, cause this is the Valley and you never know how the weather will go.

Well, this week was the first anniversary of Desert Words. Dance along.

Not too much else has happened this week. Have noticed myself enjoying some simple pleasures more as of late. Hope that continues.

My thoughts are already on what I’m going to do for the A-Z challenge and for Camp NaNo. Got topics for over half of the letters so far and wondering if should do rewrite of past efforts or new one for Camp.

Sorry if I keep staring out the window. Just such a nice day, had forgotten what blue skies looked like. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love me some rainy day and don’t mind getting wet. But just something about today outside keeps grabbing me. Simple pleasure, ya know. here’s a picture I took on the way in.

So last year I tried to do this thing some Lokiens do of writing something for Loki for each day in July. I got three days in last time and thinking of giving it another go this year.

Okay, sorry for spacing out again. This is getting ridiculous. I’ll just leave you with some of the music I’ve got playing on my player as recompense.

They say the first year’s the hardest.

Today is the first anniversary of this blog.

I honestly wasn’t sure I would make it this long. I never had before, usually only a month or two.

A lion’s share of why I did this time goes to Diana of Part-Time Monster. If not for her #WeekendCoffeeShare, I would not have a date once a week to try and keep. I would not have learned of the A-Z Challenge (already planning this year’s effort).

And I certainly would not have the traffic that I have been lucky enough to receive and to gain the followers I have. So thanks most heartily, Diana!

And to those followers, many thanks as well. Thank you for stopping by and deciding to stay a bit. Hope I continue making it worth the trip.

Another year starts. Here’s to it being a fun one.

Skal!

Tea & Coffee – #26 – Nice to see ya, 2016

image

And a good day. Do not be alarmed by my head cold, I am not contagious. It is not viral but atmospheric. I’ll get like this again when the weather turns hot in a few months.

A quick note, if I may. A horn and hail to Lemmy from Motorhead on his passing. You were a true one off.

So, 2016. Made it thru the first day at work without writing the date wrong, so good there.

Had New Year’s Eve and Day off. Spent much of them watching The Walking Dead marathon. One ep I love just for the chance to hear Andrew Lincoln’s real accent.

Went to a friend’s house for the actual turn of the year. It was a quieter affaire then they usually put on so a nice change. I have declared 2016 to be the year of representing the House so bought a set of bracelets.

image

Gave out the other three to friends and declared them Head of their respective Houses.

Best part of the night was seeing me best mate get nicely sauced as she’s usually the DD. But we had planned ahead to cab it home so she got to partake.

And got to at last see the Sherlock Christmas special, The Abominable Bride, and it was wonderful. The ep was set back in Victorian England with such a twist at the end that could only have been done by such Sherlock geeks as Monsieurs Moffat and Gatiss. Will be trying to catch it at the cinema Tuesday next.

Made it thru my first book for the reading challenge, review to come. But can’t seem to find the next that I know I own so going to have to hit the library and see if they do. So skipping down to the next one I can lay hands on.

By the by, I should inquire as to whether the size of the pics I post are too large and I should size them appropriately. Just that I tend to send them from my phone so bit harder to do so. But if it aggravates will make the effort.

So this might be large, but it deserves to be. Welcome 2016. Let’s see what ya got.
