Tea & Coffee # 15

coffee-teaSo yesterday was the first real sign that I saw that the monsoon is here. Here in the desert, monsoon is the one time we can expect to get rain. Not that it doesn’t rain during other parts of the year, but this is when we can look for it.

There was a feel of humidity in the air. A light sprinkle for some minutes. Then later in the day a faint sand storm.

Sometimes the rain lasts for minutes, sometimes for hours. But it’s usually hard and heavy when it does. Just an example.

What is even more fun, for me at least, is when a haboob comes thru. Haboobs are dust storms that blow through.

Here’s what they look like at ground level.

And how they look from the air.

Fingers crossed I’ll be able to get some footage of my own to show you.

Wednesday is start of Camp NaNo.

Slytherin Harry PotterSlytherin Ron WeasleyRavenclaw Hermione Granger

Did get to meet a childhood hero of mine. Coach Danny White, formerly the Head Coach of the Arizona Rattlers and led them to their first two Championships (the first Az professional team to win a Championship) and, where I first knew him from, former quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. A team is often identified primarily with the quarterback and the coach and for me when I was little, the faces of the Cowboys were Danny White and Coach Tom Landry. I saw him at work, so I didn’t let on that I recognized him or do a geek out like might have elsewhere. But it was definitely cool.

Not much else happened really. Went to a ritual led by my Druid friends at the Irish Cultural Center, had a small part in it. Got to wear my sword so that’s always fun.

And of course, Gay Marriage is now officially just plain old Marriage. Whoo hoo!

It is Midsummer. Temps to be in the triple digits (only 95 now). And you look again at my hot chai latte. Yup, I’m weird.

Don’t have much time today, meant to but time went sideways somehow.

Camp NaNo is looming. Still deciding details. It’s a Harry Potter fanfic, bit AU. Should be interesting. Might be the first Camp I’ve won in quite the while.

For some reason, I put less emphasis on Camp than on regular NaNo. I guess it feels like more of a lark to me so not as much pressure.

In other news, have you heard of Library Thing? It’s an online site that lets you catalog your personal library. It’s a fun time and this week I saw this from them. Barcode labels. And my little geek-worked-in-the-school-library-unofficially-heart went pitter pat. Yeah, going to be picking some up.

Nothing much else. Could talk about Charleston, but what can you say? It was wrong and most likely will happen again.

But some things continue, in spite of us.

I feel like I should make up a name to use for you. You know, like how Stephen King uses ‘Constant Reader’? Just not sure what it should be.

Camp-Participant-2015-Twitter-ProfileI decided what I’m going to do for Camp NaNo next month. And for once, I find myself thinking about it every day. I just might get this done. To be vague, it’s going to be a Harry Potter fanfic. Be the first time I’ve done a fanfic for Camp if I remember right. Should prove interesting, might even try to keep it het.

Oh, not sure if told you, but going to cosplay for the first time during Fan Fest in December. It’s put on by the same ones who put on our Comicon. It’s smaller and at a different location. Finally decided to try for the Ninth Doctor.

48b9e0225c6f362b40dd4bf410e394e6The jacket will be the trickiest part but we will see how it goes.

Oh, and speaking of Comicon, the attendance figures came in bit ago.

Comicon attendence 75,501Fingers crossed next year I’ll have more money and more time.

Well, have to cut our meeting short today, but will see you next week. Bye.

Night ramble

Nearly 2 a.m. and still awake.

Sitting on my porch, wishing I could enjoy the dark but my neighbor’s bright as fuck porch light shines right onto my porch and cuts that dream. Can also hear his tv thru his open front window.

I miss the guy who lived there before. Was a shut-in. Hardly any sign he was there, porch light always off. Oh well.

Can hear the train bout two miles down the street. Not just the horn but the wheels too. Even though we’re in the city, always brings to mind visions of big empty countrysides. The train going thru at night and people laying in their beds listening.

Ever notice how much atmosphere plays in things, usually cause of what you’ve read? Like a Starbucks ain’t really like the small cafe tucked away on a quiet street somewhere, but I still go to one and pretend. Cause I’ve read the books and seen the movies that told me what that’s like.

Car just drove thru, couple arguing inside. Loud shout from the guy as they turned off onto the street. Might have to remember that for a story.

Half want to go to some IHOP or Danny’s right now. There’s that atmosphere thing again. Seeing the Night Owls painting in my head.

Heh, might actually be getting tired now. Interesting.

There’s a small breeze. Always say no matter how hot it is, if there’s a breeze I can work with it.

Heading inside, see if can get some sleep. Later.

Tea and Coffee #12 – Comicon edition

Told you I was going to see you this week. But it was a bit of a cheat, cause I knew what I was going to tell you about.

PHOENIX COMICON 15

Me and MBM(On the way to Comicon)

Damn, do I love our Comicon! Was only able to go yesterday (last year did all four days). Third year for me, second for my best friend (known hereafter on this blog as MBM for Me Best Mate) That’s me on the left with the grey hair.

Phxcc2015(Guide with some of this year’s guests)

20150530_100902(Saturday only pass with Khal Drago drawing)

We didn’t plan on going to any of the panels or trying for any autographs, save for one on my part. We mostly wandered around the exhibitor’s hall looking at the merchandise. We did catch Chuck Wendig’s spotlight panel.

20150530_140518Chuck is delightfully mad and a great author. His was the autograph I wanted and I got it.

So, the rest of my loot that I acquired.

20150531_111432The artist was surprised we knew Tesla. There were two others in the set, Lovecraft and Einstein. Probably be getting those later.

20150531_111807Freebies from the Del Rey booth

20150531_111542There are ten in the series. I have the first and know where can get a few of the others but these two were a steal at the price.

20150531_111522Slowly getting all the movies. Another steal.

20150531_111341I like buttons. Will have to show you my bag after putting these on.

20150531_111411I looked at a few pics and merch for Tom!Loki before deciding on this one. Was the best quality and just a great pic. By the by, I wrote it as Tom!Loki on purpose. It comes from the fanfic world where we use the exclamation mark to describe different versions of characters (AU!Character, Vampire!Character).  This is Loki as portrayed by Tom Hiddleston, not Loki as most Heathens know Him.

20150531_111258Little more money and I would have gotten seasons 2 and 3 as well. That incense is great smelling.

Arthur and PatsyDid not expect such Royalty to be present.

Next year, MBM and I are planning to go and try our hand at cosplaying for the first time. She’s thinking of going as a character from one of her favorite animes. I have no idea who I want to be, or even a top five to pick from. Won’t be a complex costume, more subtle but recognizable.

We’re one of the top ten cons in the country and the guests we get are incredible. Here’s the list of the ones from TV and Movies. You can click on the link under the banner for guests in the other categories.

The expected turnout this year was 80,000. I’ll let you know what the final number winds up being. We were trending on both Facebook and Twitter this weekend.

Tomorrow starts the June Session of Camp NaNoWriMo. I wasn’t going to do it. Then I was going to redo the project from the April Session that I tried as a screenplay, but was going to do as a novel. Now I’m thinking of putting that off til November and just doing a fun fantasy novel, more befitting Summer. We’ll see how it goes.

EDIT: Second session is actually in July. More time to be indecisive.

And just cause I want to, some videos related to today’s post.

Admittedly, learned about Nikola from them.

Hellsing can get deliciously gory, so this only hints at the violence.

Old interview.

Been a long time, I know. Glad you were able to make it.

Life continues on. Work is work *wrinkles nose* what can ya do?

I have seen Avengers 2 and YAY my name is in it! MCU Canon, baby!

Work not changing, my best friend and I should be going to our local Comicon on Saturday. With any luck I’ll get Chuck Wendig’s autograph.

Tomorrow is Memorial Day, not to be confused with Veteran’s Day. In my religion, those who died in battle and were taken to Valhalla are called the Einherjar. (On a side note, that is the only way to get into Valhalla. It is not Heaven. You don’t get in for being a good little Heathen.)

Going to try and do the National Moment of Remembrance tomorrow. Be working so have to see.

My writing practices have not been as I’ve hoped. I have only myself to blame. Old habits and such. Need to change.

I do wish to continue on with how I view life. As an opportunity to experience things. Even if it is only the inside of my own brain. To grow and learn.
(Another side note. That paragraph was written without me knowing what the next word was going to be as I was typing. Little nudge from the brainpan.)

If you know of Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, but do not know of the joy that is watching the two of them together, may I offer you this.

A Bit of Fry and Laurie – Concerning Language. Sorry, don’t remember how to embed a video.

The weather has been unseasonably nice for this time of year, chilly at night even.

And I want to raise a cup to my fellow Snakes! Slytherin has won our third House Cup at Pottermore, more than any other House!

I should be going, have to feed the twins (snakes, not humans). I will see you next weekend.

A – Z Challenge: Day 24 – Xcuses

(Yup, here’s the other one.)

Ah, xcuses. I’ve had a few.

Even my ability has been used. I can do that at the last minute and have it work cause I’ve done it in the past.

Xcuses not to write right now. Not to read.

Valid to a point but so overused. Not lacking in credibility, mind you. Just in merit.

Needing of being swept away.

Often easier said than done.

A – Z Challenge: Day 23 – Why

That’s the million dollar question, isn’t it?

Why do I do this?

It is a heady, crazy thing.

Maybe there’s a bit of the megalomania about it. God complex, anyone?

Is it the thrill of it all?

Is it a pathological need?

Genius or madness? Such a thin line after all.

Why do I keep coming back to it? Is it the one thing I am good at? I can’t sing (though I do). I’m marginal at playing an instrument.

But writing?

Yeah.
